چکیده

Sensitivity, reproducibility, and specificity are requirements for a suitable assay for hormones. The quantitation of a-MSH 1 is currently based on a technique devised in 1954, which utilized isolated pieces of frog skin (1). In the presence of a-MSH, frog skin darkens with a measurable decrease in the reflection of light from the skin. Although this assay possesses great sensitivity (less than 10-1" g of a-MSH), it does not have the degree of specificity necessary to discriminate among the several substances that darken frog skin, such as ACTH and aand ,8-MSH. This lack of specificity has prevented application of the in vitro frog skin assay to clinical problems. Immunochemical techniques have become useful for the measurement of several small polypep-

The Value of Technetium-99m Labeled Alpha-Melanocyte- Stimulating Hormone (99mTc-α-MSH) in Diagnosis of Primary and Metastatic Lesions of Malignant Melanoma

Objective(s): Malignant melanoma is the most lethal type of skin cancers with unfavorable prognosis. Alpha-MSH peptide analogues have a high affinity for melanocortine-1 (MC1) receptors on melanocytes overexpressing in malignant melanoma cells. Pre-clinical studies have shown promising results for radiolabeled MSH imaging in this malignancy. The purpose of this study is to assess the diagnostic...

Molecular cloning of a novel melanocortin receptor.

Using the technique of the polymerase chain reaction primed with oligonucleotides based on the homologous transmembrane regions of seven transmembrane G protein-linked receptors, we isolated three full-length human genes that encode a novel subgroup of this receptor family. Recently, two of these receptors were identified as specific for alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) and adre...

Plasma α-melanocyte stimulating hormone predicts outcome in ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE α-Melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is an endogenously produced neuropeptide derived from the same precursor as adrenocorticotropic hormone. α-MSH has profound immunomodulatory properties and may also be neuroprotective. Nothing is known about α-MSH and changes in its plasma concentrations in patients with acute ischemic stroke. METHODS In this prospective observat...

The Neuropeptide Alpha-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone Is Critically Involved in the Development of Cytotoxic CD8+ T Cells in Mice and Humans

BACKGROUND The neuropeptide alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone is well known as a mediator of skin pigmentation. More recently, it has been shown that alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone also plays pivotal roles in energy homeostasis, sexual function, and inflammation or immunomodulation. Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone exerts its antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory effects by binding...

Adrenocorticotrophic and melanocyte-stimulating peptides in the human pituitary.

The adrenocorticotrophic and melanocyte-stimulating peptides of the human pituitary were investigated by means of radioimmunoassay, bioassay and physicochemical procedures. Substantial amounts of adrenocorticotrophin and a peptide resembling beta-lipotrophin were identified in pituitary extracts, but alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, beta-melanocyte-stimulating hormone and corticotrophin-li...
